Girls Weekend in San Diego

I am lucky to continue friendships with many of my high school friends. This past weekend, Andrea and I flew out to San Diego to meet up with Liz, Tim and their new baby Asher. We had a fun, relaxing weekend that included lots of great talks, good food, a couple of hikes, shopping and sight seeing. Thanks Andrea and Liz for another fun vacation-- I can't wait for next year!

After 6-7 years of playing volleyball, our team won the championship last night! In the last couple of years we have had several regulars, usually made up of Rodd, Josh, Brett, Heidi, Andrea and Rachel, who play year round. It is great to get out every Wednesday night, work out a bit and hang out with friends all at the same time! And thanks to Amma- who makes all this possible- watching Shay and Alyssa each time. Shay gets excited when she sees my "volleyball" shirt- it means fun times at Amma's!

Weekend in the cities

We headed up to the cities to visit Ang, Evan, Owen and Anders. First we met up at the children's museum, which was a nut house, but all the kids definitely enjoyed themselves. Then Shay and Owen skied the Twin Cities Mini Loppet, while the moms stayed home to watch after the little ones! Saturday was topped off with going out to Broadway Pizza and blizzards from DQ- a busy and very fun day! Congratulations to the Pengelly family for welcoming their newest addition- Lucas Evan who was born on Tuesday February 7th!

We headed over the Erickson house to "watch" the Superbowl. I think Brett and Gregg got to see at least half of the game. Shay and Alyssa pretty much only watched and danced with the halftime show. Everyone else had glimpses now and then. However, we did eat great apps, pizza's and a football themed dessert, the cousins did really well playing together and the adults got a few conversations in. And according to Shay- Olive and Millie's house is more fun to visit than the Children's Museum, which is a tall order to fill! Thanks for the fun time Erickson clan!

An Evening Out with the Grandparents

Shay was able to spend a night away with Papa Mark, Grandma Stacy and Taylor. They ate a picnic dinner in the car on the way to the big event. The girls (and Grandparents) loved the play- Harold and the Purple Crayon- put on by the children's theater. Shay has talked about it quite a lot since and remembers some of the scenes. They were able to check out their seats before the play, order their big purple crayon cookie for intermission, and hang out for a while before the show started. Once the play started, Taylor sat on Grandpa's lap for a better view (and so the seats didn't fold up on her), and Shay did the same, but on Grandma's lap. After the play everyone headed back to the grandma and grandpa's for a slumber party- I think the girls had fun staying up late! Thanks Grandma Stacy and Papa Mark for a fun night out!

I don't think we have ever posted about our volleyball team, which is weird since the same group of 6 to 8 people have being playing together for a few years. Yes, the team has evolved and changed a bit over time, but we have had a solid group now for some time. Usually our "regular" team members include Heidi, Josh, Andrea, Chad, Rodd and Kristina. Over the years we have been through many wins and losses, great conversations, tons of laughs, many meals and drinks at our sponsor Beetle's Bar and Grill, and a few births- up till now all girls have been born :) We are now playing almost year round, but our favorite season is summer- where we play outside in the sand! A big thanks to Amma who watches the girls so we can enjoy an adult night out almost every week. Below are some pics from when our team got together with all the kiddos.

Gus's Baptism and Olive's 5th Birthday

We were able to celebrate 2 fun events this past weekend- our nephew and cousin Gus's baptism along with our niece and cousin Olive's birthday. We started Sunday off by going to First Presbyterian Church's early service (this is the same church Brett and Rachel were married, and Shay and Alyssa were baptized in). Gus did great, but did not appreciate the amount of water the pastor decided to put on his head. He liked hanging out with dad much better. The girls watched the baptism and then quickly left to hang out and play in the nursery area with Brett. After church we all headed over to the Erickson house for brunch, birthday cake and breaking the pinata (Good Job Becky on cracking it open :)

We had 2 very important birthdays to celebrate, so our whole nuclear family (Papa Mark and Grandma Stacy, Jesse and Ambre, Megan, Jake, Taylor and Kailey - Jake's daughter) headed up to Brainerd for a long weekend. Grandma Stacy turned 60 (looking great) and Taylor turned 4. During our 3+ days we ate very well thanks to a few good cooks in the family, talked a lot, watched movies, went on hikes outside, swam at the water park, played pool, darts, Mexican train and card games. On Sunday the Winter families joined the celebration for a few hours. Although the drive was long, it was totally worth the trip!

Shay's Visit to Grandma and Grandpa's

Shay's daycare was closed all last week, so she was able to stay at Grandma and Grandpa's house for a while- all by herself- she was so excited! While at the grandparents, Shay played a lot, went on night walk with the flashlight, hung out with cousin Taylor, went to the library story hour and to an indoor playground. A fun and busy week! Thanks Papa Mark and Grandma Stacy for such a fun and memorable week.

I was reading a blog from a girl who I went to high school with and just loved her latest entry. I have paraphrased and added my own touches below.

The strength of your sister bond is growing stronger. I hope that we are giving you an environment that is needed to grow a relationship that will not crumble. I hope you go about your days knowing that someone always has your back. When your first boyfriend breaks your heart, I hope you crawl into bed with your sister and cry until you giggle knowing that you are much better off without that boy. I hope that when your parents rules drive you both crazy, you can stay up late and talk all about how they are out to ruin both of your lives. If either of you ever choose to marry, I hope the other is standing witness, even if she is the only witness you have. And when one of you finds out you are about to become a mother, I hope you pick up the phone and know exactly who deserves one of the very first phone calls. She Made the Move to the Big Bed

Alyssa decided it was time to get out of the pack n play she has been sleeping in for the last 6 months and move to the big bed. One night when Shay was at her grandparents and I was working late, she "told" Brett she wanted to try out the bed. He was getting her ready for bed, and she pointed and said "big bed nigh-night". Brett asked her to show him and she hopped up into the bed and laid down. Really couldn't of had a clearer signal than that. She decided this last Wednesday and is now coming up to a full week of sleeping her big girl bed. Good job Alyssa! Oh, she is so not our baby anymore :(

We were able to celebrate Christmas a few times this year. 2011 was exciting because this is the first year Shay was able to start to understand what Christmas was all about. She was so excited to see everyone and of course, open presents. Christmas Eve we headed over to Amma's after going to church. Everyone was there, and the girls had a great time playing with their cousins. Alyssa had special interest in Baby Gus. Christmas Day we headed to my aunt Marylou's where the whole Sturm family got together for great conversation and delicious food. The day after Christmas we headed to Papa Bill's and Grandma Ginger's house to have fun with the Carroll family. Whew! We got a lot of celebrating done in just a few days!

Duluth Trip

We headed up to Duluth to see the Burns family and the Bentleyville lights this past weekend, which is becoming an annual traditions. We all had so much fun, but Shay is the one who may have enjoyed it the most- it is her main topic of conversation the last couple of days. While we were up north, we had great conversations (some even non-kid oriented :), played a lot, saw the lights, decorated cookies, fought over toys, ate well, went on a "hike, skated on boots, and had tons of fun. Thanks Elicia, Shawn, Breck and Cullen for another awesome weekend!

She's Growing Up

Lately, Brett and I have noticed that a lot of "cute" things Shay did as a baby and toddler are no more. Especially when we listen to her conversations. "A-bone" which was "oatmeal" and the saying the monkey sound instead of saying "monkey" used to be common words in our house. Although it is great to see her grow, it is a bit sad to realize we don't have our really little girl anymore. Shay now has thoughts, feelings and opinions on almost everything, and doesn't feel a need to hold back on letting you know where she is coming from :) Replaced with the cute words, are big girl conversations, the ability to stick with an activity for more than 5 minutes, stating the words "I love you" and knowing what it means, and a host of other very cool things. It is a blessing to watch her learn and grow, and hopefully we can tag along for most of the ride.

We have not completely settled into our new house, but we are definitely getting closer. Shay and Alyssa have been eager to help when they can. Shay has helped with painting (she painted the closet in the basement playroom), helped dad set up our new bed frame as well as helped hang up pictures. Alyssa is noticing new things around the house and loves to take the ornaments off then on the tree. We haven't been outside much at night since its been so cold, but once in a while we venture out to take a walk with Bailey. Both girls seem to love getting all dressed up and getting their picture taken- so here it is.

Brett and Rachel headed out for a 4 day vacation trip last weekend to attend Brian and Lauren's wedding. Needless to say, the groom's dinner, wedding and reception were fabulous! The wedding was at the cathedral downtown, while the reception was at the Navy Pier. We also enjoyed getting to hang out with Brett's sister Julie and her boyfriend Seth, between wedding events. It was great to have some time to relax, and have conversations that lasted more than 4 minutes, without kid interruptions!

We were able to host Ambre's bridal shower at our new house- and it worked out well. The shower included our side of the family, plus Ambre's mom and hopefully it was fun for everyone. How Do I Measure Up?

Since moving and trying to settle into our new house, we have had quite a few projects going on. One of the first on the list was to measure and mark how tall the kiddos where. At first, we were going to mark each closet, but Shay decided she would like to be by "Lyssa", so now both measurements are in Lyssa's closet. Its been so much fun to see them make the rooms their own, and they are loving playing with all the new (okay just out of the truck they have been packed in for 6 months) toys.

This year was Shay's first year she really went trick or treating- and she LOVED it. Brett and Gregg (and a few other dads from the neighborhood) took the girls out and Millie and Shay outlasted everyone, trick or treating for over an hour and a half. Alyssa on the other hand made it to one house and decided this candy stuff wasn't for her and spent the night at Amma's house with the grandparents and toys. A bit later Olive decided to join Alyssa and just play. Shay and Millie got enough candy for everyone to have plenty! We were able to celebrate Halloween 2011 by eating pumpkin shaped pizza, getting dressed up and hanging out with family and friends!

Halloween Themed Weekend

To try and fully enjoy our first full weekend in our new house we decided to go to or have a party each night. On Friday night, Brett and Rachel headed off to the neighbors after Alyssa went to sleep and while Shay had fun with the babysitter, to celebrate Oktoberfest. We got to meet a bunch of new neighbors, along with catching up with some old (now new again) neighbors. It was nice to have some adult conversation and it was a great way to be welcomed back to Stonehedge! On Saturday our volleyball team (plus kiddos) came to our house for a potluck and pumpkin carving. Morgan, Faith, Shay and Alyssa had a good time playing together, and the adults had fun in between all the chaos. Sunday we headed over to our other neighbors house for a chili get together and another pumpkin carving with 4 other families. Whew! We are now warmed up for trick or treating tonight!

We moved into our new house this past weekend! Although all the big stuff is in, we are definitely not unpacked. Friday the movers came and Brett, Rachel, Jean, Bill and Ginger all helped throughout the day getting everything out of the truck and trailer and into the house. Saturday Mark and Stacy came down and we spent the day organizing the big items downstairs, setting up the TV and other electronic equipment, putting together storage shelves, hanging shower curtains and getting the girls rooms put together. Yesterday we relaxed a bit as a family, went on our first walk and stopped at the park between unpacking boxes. We are so thankful to Bill and Ginger to let us live with them these last 6 months and are grateful to be in our new house. Hopefully many happy memories will be made!

Catching Up.. Weekend in Duluth with the Burns Family

A couple weeks ago we headed up north and spent an awesome weekend with the Burns family. During our short stay we headed to Boo at the Zoo where the kids got to dress up in costumes, trick or treat with zoo staff and volunteers as well as check out the animals. Shay and Breck really enjoyed their time, and I think the little kiddos did too. Brett and Shawn went to the UMD hockey game against Notre Dame while the kiddos got movie night with a sleepover! We had so much fun and are excited to make the trip again soon- hopefully in Decemeber when we get to see all the holiday lights. Thanks Elicia, Shawn, Breck and Cullen for a fun time!

Keeping Busy and Having Fun

These last few weeks have been really busy at the Carroll household. We are getting ready for our move (tomorrow :) into the new house. Alyssa has been perfecting her walking skills and is now into everything, while Shay has lots of stories (and opinions) to share everyday. Fun At Daycare

It has been about a month now since Shay and Alyssa headed back to daycare while Brett headed back to work. This year the girls are going to separate places (long story), but so far so good. Alyssa is enjoying the small group at Tracie's house (she is 1 of 3 kiddos there) and Shay is loving the energy, activities, and outdoor time she gets at Caryline's house, just down the block. Its been nice for all of us to be more on a consistent schedule, and bedtimes are a bit easier :). Tracie emails daily pictures of Alyssa, and Caryline sends a picture newsletter once a month-- so nice to see some of what they do during the day. We get daily journals, but it is great to actually the activities!

A Busy Last Week

Over the last week we have attended a big couple bridal shower party, went to a 60th anniversary/fundraiser party for the civic theater, hosted a meet with over 1,000 runners, and had the cabinets, wood floors and tile go in at our new house. The most notable quote from the week however, came from Shay after I hit a deer driving the girls home from daycare. After hitting the deer with the front of the car, then having it roll onto the windshield and then off the car- I immediately looked into the back seat to see 2 girls staring at me with huge eyes. A few seconds later, after regaining composure, Alyssa starting laughing and Shay asked me- "Mom, did you 'dead-em'?". Obviously we are currently not a very empathetic family, or maybe we just haven't seen the movie Bambi. Below are some the everyday expressions we get to see.

First Steps

At 16.5 months old Alyssa decided to take her first steps... thank goodness! We have been working with her every day trying to encourage her to walk, but to no avail. Last week was the first breakthrough. Brett had been using a dishtowel to hold her up around the middle (since she always wants to hold onto our hands), and last Wednesday we decided to tie the dish towel around her instead.. and off she went walking down the hallway, taking at least 12 steps in a row by herself. Since then she has taken a few steps here and there, and by no means is a walker, but we are so glad to learn she CAN walk. Now, we will find out when she WANTS to walk- which maybe a whole new story.
Shay in the meantime has also practiced walking and is doing well :)

Hello Fall

Well, our summer is officially over. Brett had his first day of school and both girls are back at daycare. We celebrated our last weekend with a few ski runs, including Shay on the ski tube and Papa Bill barefooting. It was a great summer on the lake, and now we are looking forward to a consistent routine, lots of learning and getting up early.. or maybe not.

Aunt Julie and Seth came to visit MN for a long weekend. We were able to have several family meals, enjoy boatrides and have great conversation. It is good to catch up and hear how life is in Seattle. We look forward to seeing them again in November- but in a new location- Chicago for Brian's wedding!

This month Brett took Shay to her first dentist appointment with Dr. West. Just as we expected she was tentative at first, but then warmed up and did a great job while they checked out her gums and teeth. Shay was pumped at the end because she got a Cinderella toothbrush along with new toothpaste and sunglasses! I don't know how Dr. West is going to top that next time. After her appointment was done our family went out to Panera for breakfast so Shay could fill in Alyssa and Mom how everything went!

Organized Sports.. Not in the Cards (Yet)

Shay and Patrick were able to participate in the local YMCA's sports sampler nights aimed at 3 to 4 years part of July and August. Each Tuesday night they were introduced to a new sport- either soccer, basketball, football or baseball. To say the least, neither toddler was very interested, the instructions given by the coaches were very hard for little ones to follow, most of the kiddos spent their time picking grass, running or trying to leave and I ended up playing in most of the "games". Not quite how we intended it to go, but I am glad we experienced it. My favorite quote from Shay- "Mom, I don't like this. I am sweaty and want to go sit in the shade". An athlete in the making. Next time back go to gymnastics (which both Patrick and Shay loved) or swimming lessons.

Every year since 2004 we have spent a weekend with the Burns at the lake. A lot has changed since then.. marriage, a few kiddos, a bit busier schedule... but we seem to be able enjoy ourselves no matter what the stage.

We were able to spend 3 days with Amie, Peter and Eli along with Angie, Evan, Owen and Anders. Although there wasn't much down time- we sure had fun! We have now been staying out at the lake for 3 months, while our house in town is being built. (Thank you Papa Bill and Grandma Ginger for being such great hosts and roommates!) We figure you have to be tired, okay really tired to fall asleep in the middle of eating. Saying that, Shay used fall asleep and I guess still sometimes does while eating. Up until this weekend, Alyssa has not been able to experience. Well, she can now join Shay- she fell asleep mid-meal on Sunday after a morning of boatrides and swimming.

Usually the extended Carroll family rents a cabin up north or in the Hayward area, but this year we all gathered at Papa Bill's and Grandma Ginger's place. It sure worked well for us since we already lived there! Our week was filled with waterskiing, swimming, tubing, pontooning, grilling, singing (the girls put on a concert or two) and lots of fun!

We have been a bit busy lately with recovering from surgery and the building process, but we were able to have a great father's day together. My parents, siblings and significant others as well as Brett's sister and her family came to the lake for the day. We went on boatrides, grilled out and just relaxed. It was a day filled with laughter, lots of kiddo's, good food and great conversation. Thank you to the 3 best fathers I know- my dad, my husband and my father in law. Thanks for all you have done, and all you continue to do!

Our lot has been purchased, house plans have been finalized and the hole has been dug! We are hopefully well on our way to building our new house. This house is about a block or two away from our old one, with just a few slight revisions in floor plans. The big change- 3 bedrooms on one floor! We will also have a bigger dining room, which should hopefully hold a lot of guests for dinners and other get togethers. However, the yard is much smaller and we are hoping it will still be a good place for a patio and a backyard game or two- we'll have to wait and see. This week they are hoping to have some or most of the framing done. We have picked out a lot of the products- siding, shakes, outside rock and trim, plumbing fixtures, most of the lighting, fireplace, and cabinets. Tomorrow we are going to pick out the countertops, tile and carpet. The house is on schedule to be finished in September or October.

Bye, Bye Tonsils

Shay got her tonsils and adenoids out Wednesday. We tried to prepare her well in advance of her T&A operaration. She met with our friend Heidi who told her all about surgery and what to expect, along with showing her much of the equipment and giving her stickers, a surgery doll and a mask to keep! (Thanks Heidi!) She also watched the kids "Preparing for Surgery" video produced by my work :)
We called in Tuesday night and found out we were 3rd case (we had hoped for 1st). When we got to the hospital in the morning and while we were in the admission process, an emergency surgery was booked, so the OR was no longer available. We ended up going back home for a few hours before heading back through admissions again. Shay did a pretty good job of not having anything to eat or drink for SEVERAL hours. After getting through admissions (a 2nd time), Shay was given a sedative before they took her back for surgery. She was a bit loopy and quite giggly. Surgery went well and the doctor reported that both her tonsils and adenoids were "absolutely huge".
The recovery has been tough so far, a bit rougher than Brett and I expected.
When we met Shay after surgery in the recovery room she was screaming and trying to pull out her IV as well as other tubing. She calmed down a bit when she realized we were there, but she was in a lot of pain. We ended up being in recovery for quite a while, due to Shay not eating or drinking much and a medication mess-up. We left later Wednesday night, and had a ROUGH night. The best way to describe our sleep schedule was that of having a newborn, except worse.
Thursday morning continued to be tough, but last night about 9pm after she had 3 popsicles in a row (the most she has eaten in a couple of days), Shay started talking and acting a bit more like herself. Hopefully today is even better! Good job Shay! We are excited to see Shay not struggle to breath when she has a cold, sleep better (and quieter) at night, and have more energy.

We were able to celebrate Rachel's 31st birthday a few different ways. First, Shay and I were able to go out for lunch with Great Grandma Betty, Marylou and Kathy (thank you :). Alyssa and Rachel were able to visit Great Grandma Carol later in the day as well. Then Jesse and Ambre took me out later Friday for an evening cap at Bonfire's. Shay and Rachel went to the Children's Museum and Cafe Latte with Angie, Owen and Anders. Saturday night Grandpa Mark and Grandma Stacy had the nuclear family over for dinner and cupcakes-- what a fun day!

Shay and Patrick spent Wednesday nights in May heading to gymnastics. They both loved the trampoline and foam pit and the stickers and stamps they got at the end of each session. After gymnastics we would head out to eat- which everyone loved. Since June has rolled around and gymastics is over, we have all missed it. So after Shay's recovers from her tonsil removal surgery on the 15th- we think we are going to hit up soccer next!

This week we got together for a playdate instead, and the babies came this time too! I was amazed at what we accomplished in just a short period of time- playing outside with the hose and other yard toys, grilling out hamburgers, feeding all 4 kiddos without a huge mess, making and eating rice krispie bars (thank you Ryan :), lots of jumping and running as well as stories in bed!

After this summer is over, there will be some changes with our daycare. Tracie has been our provider since Shay started daycare at 6 months old. After this year, Tracie is transitioning to an infant/toddler only- a special license. We were obviously bummed to hear this. After making over 35 phone calls, and had a few interviews we found a new place! Shay will go to Ms. Caryline's house (who was a preschool teacher and now runs a full time preschool out of her home) and Alyssa will stay at Tracie's for another year. After next summer, Alyssa will join Shay and Ms. Caryline's house. Whew. Although the change will be hard, we had a "trial" period over the last couple of weeks, and it seemed to go just fine with Shay at Ms. Caryline's and Alyssa's at Tracie's. One bonus- Tracie and Carylines houses are only a block apart. The girls saw each other at the park a few times!

Okay. this really isn't our house, its Papa Bills and Grandma Gingers house we will be staying at until our house is built. We close on our home on Friday as well as buy our new lot. Hopefully our new house will be done around the beginning of October. Our new home will be...... about a block from our old one and will be just some adustments to our current floor plan! Not original or unique, but I guess we know what we like :)

The girls gave us one of the best presents every yesterday --- sleeping in till 9:30. Amazing. The whole family slept past 9am- this hasn't happened since the day we brought Alyssa home! Each of the girls also made something for me- Shay had made an art picture using her hands as flower petals, and Alyssa made me a little pillow with her handprints on it. I am so happy to be mom of these 2 precious girls!

Rachel headed out for a long weekend to Nashville and Atlanta to meet up with Andrea and Liz- a visit long overdo! Brett, Shay and Alyssa stayed back and kept the house in order!
In Nashville we were able to listen to several up and coming bands along the main strip, eat at amazing restaurants (almost all our food was fabulous), visit the country music hall of fame, relax, and talk, talk and talk some more :) After a couple days in Nashville we headed south to Andrea's home in Atlanta to hang out with her family and enjoy the warm weather. It was a great trip- vacationing with girlfriends is so much fun!

Both Shay and Alyssa have a good time at our providers house. Shay loves the interaction with all the other kiddos and all the fun projects they do. Alyssa enjoys being around the older kids, especially when they "read" to her or include her in their band (she usually bangs cups together). This month the theme is "circus" and last Friday they put on a show. Shay was a tightrope walker and a clown. Alyssa was an active audience member.

She's one year old today! I remember a year ago waking up early, anxiously waiting till we could check in at the hospital and then being SO happy my doctor showed up for surgery. We were very excited for her arrival- and cherished those first unbelievable moments seeing her. I do remember her crying a lot when she was born and thinking - uh oh- Shay didn't cry at all- what are we in for? :) Well, Alyssa- you have been an absolute sweetheart and we can't wait to see all the growing and changes that come this next year. Florida Vacation

We headed down to Cape Coral over spring break to enjoy family, warm weather and the beautiful scenery. Both Shay and Alyssa did well traveling, and mom and dad didn't fair too bad either! The days were filled with boat rides, swimming in the pool, great food, and games at night. Although most days were not "relaxing" with 3 children 3 or under, we had a great time!

A Little Catching Up to Do... Burns Family Visit and Millie's Birthday Weekend

Burns Visit
Shawn, Elicia, Breck and Cullen made their way from Duluth to Rochester to visit us. We had a great time- going to the indoor playground, playing hockey, drawing, cutting, eating, and going to the House of Bounce- the kids kept busy. Shay and Breck exchanged birthday presents (thanks SO much for the cool slip and slide) and the adults were even able to spend some time just relaxing! We always have so much fun with their family and are excited to have another summer cabin vacation planned with them soon!

We are all excited to head to a warmer climate very soon. Not too excited for the packing and plane rides, however. Almost every night we look through the scrapbook of our last Florida trip (this is Shay's choice of book) and Shay asks questions about the plane, the pool, etc. I have gotten both of the girls summer clothes washed and new swim suits. Brett and Shay have also prepared by trying out some new swimming techniques.

11 Months

The biggest news this month.... Alyssa is on the move. Previously she had shown almost no interest in crawling, but after one day staying home sick with Dad, she was moving! She decided crawling on all fours at a pretty fast rate was the way to go. We are happy she is able to get where she wants to go most of the time. However, with this new found independence there is a little new found attitude. She has some opinions on where she would like to be, as well as where she would like others to be!
Some other new things this month include- clapping and waving (we think) and eating almost all table food. She has developed a little bit of attachment to mom, separation anxiety here we come. We are also starting to refer to her much more as "Lyssa" or "Lyss", I guess we will see if that sticks. Either way, we are pumped to see her personality come out more and more each day and can hardly believe she will be 1 next month!

Its hard to believe the youngest member of our family is 2 months shy of being a year old. Wow. Alyssa is such a joy to be around. With her laid back personality, the way she loves to grab your hair, give kisses and snuggle, Alyssa can light up your day. Though we joke that she is our "high maintenance" child, she is a pretty easy baby. As far as developments over the last month, Alyssa-
- calls her bottle "ba, ba"
- says "ma ma" especially when she is upset (not sure if I like this or not)
- loves playing games- peek a boo, so big or just goofing around
- uses the pincher grip constantly
- eats quite a bit of table food, her favorite being cheese
- gets into the sitting position from laying down
- has taken one to two moves forward on all fours, but is not crawling
Infact, we aren't sure if she is goinng to crawl-- we have not seen much interest of movement forward. I guess we will have to stay tuned for the gross motor skills-- reminds me of someone :)

Over the holiday weekend our family joined the Pengelly's for a 3 day weekend at Breezy Point Resort. Although our original plan of lots of time spent cross country skiing and ice skating didn't turn out, we had a blast! Everyday the kids went swimming, got to eat breakfast at the restaurant and played in our condo/house. We ventured out to the frozen lake one day as well. Anders and Alyssa stayed warm, while Owen and Shay pretty much had fun at all the activities.

Neither of our girls are known for having perfect hair. Just recently, we figured out a hairstlye for Shay that would last most of the day- it consists of 2 half ponytails and bangs. Its considered a success because most evenings she still has both binders in ! Alyssa is taking after her sister. Often times her hair is sticking straight out or just plain messy. We did figure out a "why" behind her madness. After drooling, putting her hands in her mouth or food, Alyssa will often grab at her hair-- ending up with it sticking up with force straight out from her head and, unfortunately staying in that position for quite some time. Luckily for Alyssa though, as soon as her hair is long enough- we have 2 half ponies coming!

Shay and Alyssa celebrated Valentines Day several ways. Sunday they both received cards and presents from Papa Mark, Grandma Stacy and Great-Grandma Parke. Shay put all three sheets of possible stickers in her new book. Yesterday at Tracie's they enjoyed wearing red, eating heart pizza and exchanging valentine's cards. Last night Amma stopped by with balloons and Papa Bill and Grandma Ginger had cards and cupcakes-- what a good deal! For parents who don't do a good job celebrating most holidays, they sure had a fun time with Valentines Day!

Brett had Alyssa help him install a board in her crib. Since she continues to get limbs caught in between the rails and wakes up crying in pain from a stuck arm or leg, Brett came up with the board idea. Because she is under a year, bumpers are discouraged, so the hard board it is. She seemed to like the drilling part however.

Shay enjoys almost any game you play with her. Lately she has really liked "hide and seek". Although if you ask her where she is, Shay will tell you exactly where she is hiding. She has come up with some unique spots lately.

This past weekend was super busy for our family. We had a couple of play dates with friends, staying up a bit later when Uncle Jesse and Ambre came to visit, and then family Christmas on Sunday. Shay did not have a nap on Sunday and ended up falling asleep during dinner (6:15)! She leaned over on Brett's leg and was out within seconds. Alyssa went to sleep not much after for the night. Brett and I had unexpected night to ourselves. We hardly knew what to do!

Last weekend the Pengellys came down to Rochester to hang out. We were all able to go to mall where there is a kids play space, Brett and Evan went skiing, the kiddos hung out and the adult enjoyed games after everyone went to sleep. The Pengelly's also squeezed in a photo session with my friend Catharine (Bliss photography) on Sunday as well. Busy! It was good to catch up, see the improvements Anders has made, and spend time with everyone.

Brett is on a broomball team that plays one or two days a week, which he really enjoys. Although I have heard he spends more time in the penalty box than any other player on the team, he still manages to score a few goals. Shay enjoys watching him "get game ready". Last week she decided it was time for her to get ready.

9 Months

Alyssa is 3/4 of a year old! She is such a delight. One of my favorite things right now is to walk in after work and just see her face light up. She kicks her feet and lets out a squeal when she realizes I am home-- what a good welcoming committee! She has also been up to a few new things this past month:
- Rolls to where she wants to go
- Stands with help
- Says "dada" and "ba ba"
- Squeals and shrieks quite loudly
- Separation anxiety (a little bit)
- "Swims"- when on her tummy lifts both her legs and arms up and wiggles. Maybe it is her version of crawling, except she doesn't go anywhere.
- Laughs at her sister
- Reacts to noises (Bailey's play bark)
And to think she will be turning 1 in 3 months- wow.

Alyssa has now graduated from the baby bath tub, is using the regular tub and loves it! She lets out this scream every time we turn the water on and splashes away once she is in the tub. The first time Shay came to see what the commotion was and decided she wanted to join her. It was a cool moment to remember- one of those that makes you warm and glowing inside (an utterly happy for a minute :). However, the pictures did not exactly capture that!

We have cut Shay's hair several times at home-- usually just a bang trim, but this week she got her first professional haircut. Shay did a great job sitting patiently and followed everything the hairdresser asked her to do. It may have been because they let her hold the Shrek toy (which was the absolute highlight of the whole experience), or because Shay was not quite sure what this lady was doing. At the end, Shay also got to bring a sucker home. What a good day!

We were able to celebrate Christmas a few times. We started in Duluth with the Sturm family (as seen before), but spent the 23rd and 24th with the Carroll's. Because Brett and Rachel were leaving for the Bahamas the day after Christmas, we celebrated with Papa Bill and Grandma Ginger a couple days early. On Chirstmas day we spent the day at my Aunt's house with the extended family, but sadly forgot the camera!

8 Months Already

Its hard to believe that Alyssa is 8 months old as of yesterday. Some days it feels like she has been part of our family forever, and other days it seems like we have a new baby in the house. Go figure. Some of the new things Alyssa is doing are:

rolling over with intent to get an object, or just roll off her blanket
saying "ba, ba, ba" or "blah, blah, blah"
giving kisses, which are usually open mouthed and may involve her tongue sticking out
give her own style of hugs (one arm around you and then leaning in)
laughing and talking to Shay

She has been so much fun to just hang out with and we are really enjoying our two daughters interacting together.

Duluth 2010!

To celebrate Christmas our immediate family took a trip up north to spend the weekend at Beacon Pointe Resort in Duluth, MN. We had great company, good food, a beautiful condo, and time to spend just relaxing and hanging out. We played games, ate well, went to Bentleyville to see the Christmas lights and had good conversations. Brett, Rachel, Shay and Alyssa also stopped by the Burns house each day to catch up and play. It was a great way to spend our holiday weekend!

Since being snowed in for a couple of days last week, we were able to quite a few things around the house.. some that were productive, some that weren't. Brett had the girls one day this past week since school was closed and they had a pretty good time together from what Shay tells me. Although being snowed in isn't my favorite thing, this time around I think we all enjoyed it.

We LOVE Snow!

We woke up this weekend to lots of white, fluffy, soft snow! Finally! Shay has been waiting for winter for quite some time. Partly because she wants to go sledding, but probably mostly due to the fact that her birthday will come AFTER the snow melts. FYI- she already knows exactly the kind of cake she wants-- purple.

After a busy day on Saturday, Sunday was family day. Brett, Rachel, Shay, Alyssa and Bailey went to Quarry Hill Nature Preserve (which is about 3 minutes from our house) to do a little sledding and hiking. As you can see, Shay truly enjoyed herself (as did the rest of us). These last few weeks have been stressful for our whole family, so it was very nice and even serene to enjoy some quiet, fun times in the woods.

Underwater World

Brett, Shay, Alyssa, Evan and Owen went to Underwater World last weekend. Owen and Shay loved seeing all the fish, sharks and ocean creatures. Shay especially like the ones that looked like Nemo and Dori. Owen liked pretty much everything. Alyssa stayed awake for most of the tour too. The trip was finished off with snack- mish mash and of course, milk!

Fun, Or Not - in the Exersaucer

We finally decided to bring out the Exersaucer for Alyssa. For the most part, she enjoys it for the first 5 -10 minutes and then decides it is time to get out-- and get out fast. This is a bit different experience than with Shay, who loved to hang out in it as long as you wanted (or needed) her too. Alyssa prefers being held and carried around with you, watching whatever you are doing, but the exersaucer can be a runner up sometimes!

Yes, she does wear clothes most of the time at home-

7 Months

Its hard to believe, but Alyssa is 7 months already! Some new things she has done in the last month include sitting on her own (we have the boppy just in case), rolling over both ways, standing with support, and starting some crawling movements (which go no where). She continues to laugh with or at her sister, talk, spit up, squeal and not like being on her stomach. According to Shay, "Lyssa" is too little for a lot of things, but she is getting bigger every day!

Alyssa's Baptism

Alyssa was baptized at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday November 14th. This is the same church Brett grew up, we were married and Shay was baptized! Alyssa was a peach through the service and enjoyed smiling at the congregation when pastor TJ introduced her. Shay's role was to give Alyssa her gift of a fish necklace, and she did a good job. Afterwards we headed to Jean's to celebrate which included a delicious brunch with parents, grandparents, and cousins.

Brett is an awesome dad. Both Shay and Alyssa just love having him around- he plays make up games with them, runs around and makes them laugh- a lot. I have been gone a bit more recently and Brett has picked a few things I normally do, hence the first try at pigtails- not too bad.

Friends

We are so lucky to have good friends. Many of our friends live close- from a couple minute drive to an hour or two. We also have a few a bit farther, in Atlanta and Seattle. Either way, we are happy to spend time and just have fun. Shay and Alyssa have also joined in recently, and it is so neat to see our kids becoming friends (okay sometimes it may be forced friends right now, but we will still take it :)

This past week was a good example of how we have relied on and also hopefully helped friends. Amie filled in as babysitter for Shay and Alyssa so I could attend Heidi's baby shower. Catharine and Ryan watched the girls when Brett and I both had to work late one night. The Bliss's used our bathroom/showers since theirs was in repair for the week (hence the nice bath picture of Shay and Patrick). We visited the Burns family and were able to have fun and good conversation. Angie and I figured out how to rebook our entire cruise (including excursions, table seating, etc) to the Bahamas (which was cancelled by accident) in just less than 2 hours --yeah teamwork! Our life if full of good friendships, just the way we want it!

Halloween x 3

We were able to celebrate Halloween a few times this year. We celebrated the holiday by getting together at the Kurtz's house the week before, a party at Tracie's house, trick or treating in Duluth at the Nature Center, and handing out candy at Amma's house on Halloween-- what a celebration! For two parents who don't do a great job with the "holiday stuff", we may have out done ourselves this year.
